DC League of Super-Pets (2022)
DC League of Super-Pets is a fun animation adventure for the whole family. The film shows that comic book adaptations don’t always have to be live action spectacles, but that they can also successfully exist as, simply, cartoons.
The film is loosely based on the Legion of Super-Pets, which was introduced in 1962, although most of the individual members had appeared in previous stories.
At the center is Superman's dog Krypto, who imagines himself to be the shining light of his owner's life. At least, until he is made aware that ‘Supie’ is about to marry intrepid reporter Lois Lane.
Krypto, however, gets a chance to prove his worth when Superman is kidnapped along with the other members of the Justice League, in the name of his nemesis Lex Luthor.
The problem is that Krypto lost his own superpowers after consuming a piece of kryptonite hidden in a tasty piece of cheese. He gets help from a number of shelter animals, such as the dog Ace and the turtle Merton, who in a simple twist of fate acquire their own super powers.
Together they take on the sadistic guinea pig Lulu, who was once used as a lab animal by Lex Luthor and has since believed them to be partners in crime. A classic case Stockholm syndrome. But Lulu is an interesting and extremely twisted character, who also keeps the plot moving along nicely.
The Justice League members like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman, are basically reduced to supporting roles, but it doesn't matter.
Director Jared Stern keeps up the pace, the script written by him and John Whittington is full of lighthearted jokes, and the animation looks bright and cheerful. The voice cast, which includes luminaries like Dwayne Johnson, Kate McKinnon and Kevin Hart, also packs a lot of star power.
DC League of Super-Pets is a 90-minute cartoon, made on a budget of 90 million, with the money clearly on the screen. This Super-Pets movie is a super fun film that knows how to entertain from start to finish and certainly deserves to be seen on the big screen.
