My Name is Vendetta (Netflix, 2022)
My Name is Vendetta (a.k.a. Il mio nome è Vendetta) is an Italian revenge thriller that takes no prisoners.
It tells the story of Santo (Alessandro Gassmann), a former hitman for the mafia who exacts revenge on his old employers after they kill his wife and brother-in-law.
The only survivor is his daughter Sofia (Ginevra Francesconi), who is not very pleased (to put it mildly) when she finds out what her father used to do for a living.
However, Sofia takes after her old man and becomes his greatest ally after hiding out in Milan, plotting their revenge and then dishing out a meal best served cold.
As the title suggests, there is plenty of violence to go around in this movie, and genre fans will get what they want out of this - though perhaps not much more.
My Name is Vendetta is directed by Cosimo Gomez, who also wrote the script together with Sandrone Dazieri and Andrea Nobile.
There are shades of Leon and Taken, as well as numerous movies about hitmen who try to redeem themselves.
The filmmakers have created a robust and at times thrilling movie, even though Sofia’s evolution from victim to heroine goes a little too fast and some of the plot points about far-reaching surveillance seem a little hard to believe.
It’s still a pretty good genre movie, that should do brisk business on Netflix.
