Spoiler Alert (2022)
Spoiler Alert is the emotionally touching film adaptation of the book that TV-journalist Michael Ausiello wrote about the tragic love story he experienced with his late partner Kit Cowan.
Based on the book ‘Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies’ and directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick), the movie starts off as a light-hearted romantic comedy but ends as a real tearjerker.
From the very beginning it is clear that this film will not have a happy ending. But in a way that's fine. It makes you appreciate the great love (and good times) that Michael and Kit shared even more.
Michael is played by Jim Parsons (from The Big Bang Theory) while his co-star Ben Aldridge starred in Shyamalan’s Knock At The Cabin earlier this year.
The movie charts the course of their relationship, from the moment they start dating to the point that they have so many problems that they start living apart again, without actually separating.
But when Kit is diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer the pair grow closer again, knowing they only have a limited amount of time left together.
As an actor Parsons (who is also a producer on the film) seems to play a more sensitive version of Sheldon Cooper, the nerdy and neurotic character from The Big Bang Theory that made him famous.
Aldridge is handsome and winning, and you really get to feel for him, while Sally Field and Bob Irwin have fun supporting roles as Kit's parents, who once were hip enough to "almost go to Woodstock".
Michael’s back story is told through a fictitious soap opera, which emphasizes his great love for television series and leads to some of the movie’s funniest (and saddest) moments.
Spoiler Alert is a well-made and emotionally touching movie that is bound to leave you with a lump in your throat.
Note: Spoiler Alert was released in the US and Canada in late 2022. It is released in The Netherlands this week, with Germany and Spain to follow in May.
