The Night Agent is a slick, fast paced political thriller series, with appealing leads in Gabriel Basso and Luchiane Buchanan.
Peter Sutherland (Basso) is a low-level FBI-operative, whose job it is to man a phone in the basement of the White House, that functions as an emergency line for special agents in peril.
The phone is not supposed to ring, but there wouldn’t be a story unless it did. And so it does, and when Peter answers the call, his life is thrown into disarray.
On the other end of the line is the voice of Rose Larkin (Buchanan), who is calling the hotline on the advice of her aunt and uncle, who are also with the bureau, and whose lives are being threatened by other spies.
This set-up quickly kicks the plot in motion, in which Peter and Rose have to form an alliance to survive and to find out if there is a mole in the White House that threatens the Presidency.
It’s the kind of high concept lark that has been done plenty of times before, from the Jack Ryan-movies to the recent The Recruit-series, but when executed right it can still offer up plenty of thrills, especially in times when worldwide tension is growing again.
The Night Agent is based on the novel by Matthew Quirk. It was adapted to series by showrunner Shawn Ryan, who is best known for his work on series like The Shield (2002) and S.W.A.T. (2017).
Apart from the two leads, who make for a great couple, there are strong supporting turns from Eve Harlow and Phoenix Raei as the assassins chasing our heroes. Also present is Hong Chau (sporting an odd wig) as Peter’s boss Diane Farr. Chau was recently nominated for an Oscar for her supporting turn in The Whale and she is terrific again here.
I’m a sucker for this stuff and based on the first couple of episodes I would definitely recommend it. In a dangerous world there always will be room for an old-fashioned yet modern-feeling and, above all, exciting spy-show like The Night Agent.

If you like your cliches piled high and a bit overdone, this stiff, visually uninteresting movie is for you. Bottom line: If this sort of thing (complete with A “Boris and Natasha” subplot) appeals to you there are much better versions out there. Plot twists are not surprises if you just don’t care what happens to these people
