Who Is Erin Carter? (Netflix series, 2023)

Who Is Erin Carter? is a well-oiled British—American action thriller series, starring Swedish actress Evin Ahmad as the titular heroine.

On the surface, Erin Carter is an ordinary British woman who has moved to Barcelona, Spain, where she has found a teaching position at an international school. Her daughter Harper (Indica Watson) is also a student there.

However, when they visit a local  supermarket, as ordinary people do when they need groceries, and stuff, Erin suddenly finds herself in the middle of an armed robbery. 

So Erin Carter, or whoever she is, reacts in a very violent way. And very unlike the ordinary citizen she claims to be. It’s a way that turns her into a hero, but also a way that raises suspicions, especially as one of the robbers claims to recognize her before passing out.

So who the hell is Erin Carter? Is it just a case of mistaken identity? Or is she a (former) spy, secret agent, covert operative? And what will happen to her (and her family) when the authorities and/or wrong people find out? How does she explain her way out of this? So many questions, but frankly, a series like this is most fun when you don’t get all the answers straight away.

And anyway, when confronted with situations like this (in movies or series) I often think of the classic action thriller The Long Kiss Goodnight, in which Geena Davis, who happened to be in a similar position, bluntly told her kid: ‘Life is pain, get used to it.’

But that won’t exactly do here. Harper takes after her mum. She has a violent temper too. Still, Erin knows she has to act fast. So she does. And it’s the beginning of what looks to be one hell of a thrill ride. 

The seven-part series is written by Jack Lothian, directed by Ashley Way, Savina Dellicour and Bill Eagles, and produced by Left Banke, the company behind hit series like The Crown and White Lines.

The main star of Who Is Erin Carter? is undoubtedly Evin Ahmad, a Swedish actress of Kurdish origin, who rose to stardom as Leya, the lead character of the Netflix hit series Snabba Cash. She also starred in the Danish post-apocalyptic Netflix series The Rain and in the Swedish Netflix crime series Quicksand.  

It looks like Who Is Erin Carter? will be the next step in her international career, as she looks very convincing in the part.

But Indica Watson is bloody brilliant too as Harper. I’m sure this part will lead to many other roles.

Who Is Erin Carter? is one of those ‘glued to the edge of your seat’-thrillers, that tries its best to keep you hooked.
